Introduction to Glass Beadmaking, Flamework Method:

Instructor:
Harlan G. Simon
www.harlanbeads.com

Event Description:
Day One - Basic Studio Set-Up, Safety, Glass Science, and Technique.  For the first day Harlan will demonstrate, and students will practice, melting Italian soft  glass (soda-lime) cane to make a gather, to pull out stringers, to make twisties, and to form basic bead shapes (donut, cylinder, square, and pressed).  Further demonstration and practice will include basic design techniques such as dotting, laying on lines of stringers, and clear casing.

Day Two – Harlan will review basic techniques, and demonstrate more advanced surface design techniques, including the further making and use of twisties and latticinoes, dot placement to achieve rectangular and triangular patterns, the use of raking to make feathered patterns, the concept of color shading through layering, plunging with tungsten rods to create air bubble entrapment, dot masking techniques to create unusual, highly detailed and symmetric patterns, the use of bead shape mashers and molds, and the making of pinwheel patterns, using either tweezers or stringers on the bead.

Time and class interest permitting, Harlan may also discuss and demonstrate the use of frits and special and reactive color glass (sulphur-copper reactions with Ivory and turquoise, the use of Effetre opal yellow, copper green, “Evil Devitrifying Purple” (Effetre P-254), and the new crop of highly silvered lampworking cane, including Reichenbach 108 (Raku).  (There is a color revolution afoot, both in boro and soft glass, and this is an exciting time to be lampworking!)

The Fine Print:
$250.00 tuition fee includes all materials. Tuition is non-refundable, and is due at sign up.

No hot glass experience is necessary; the workshop is also suitable as a refresher, for practice, and to pick up new tips and techniques.  However, those with prior experience must understand that, owing to the basic nature of the workshop, there will be repetition of basic information and techniques.

Workshop will run from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday, and is limited to 10 Students.

The workshop will be taught using an oxygen-propane torch system (Carlisle Mini CC torches), with 104 COE glass (mainly, but not exclusively, Italian (Effetre and Vetrofond).

Harlan is an entertaining presenter, and encourages the asking of questions throughout the course of the workshop.  As well, he will help trouble shoot problems and particular challenge areas on an ongoing basis (why are my beads cracking, how to I avoid sharp and jagged ends?).  Harlan will also facilitate discussion on bead design ideas and color theory.

There will be a short break for lunch each day.
A video library on glass making will also be available for viewing.

Fusing and Slumping Classes:
Classes Taught by Kimberly

  • Fusing class will be $75.00, this includes the glass and firing charges.
  • Students will work with four 4"x4" squares and one 8" round.
  • Glass will be cut out and ready for class. If the student wants a different glass they may purchase it during class.
  • We will be using System 96 glass for all of our fusing projects.
  • Fusing will be done with the greatest of care, although, differences of glass and design will occasionally occur and the desired effect will not be realized. This is no fault of Makin Glass or the student. Because of this, fusing is an exciting adventure. There will be times when the glass cracks or other unknown circumstances can take place. The student realizes this and will not hold Makin Glass, or any of its teachers, responsible for such happenings.
  • To slump a project will take minimal time from the student, therefore, the student does not need to return the following day to slump. The firing charge is included in the class fees.
  • Open toed shoes are not allowed.
  • Open table times are $2.00 an hour with a firing charge of $20.00 per firing.
  • Firing will be done before 12:00pm. Any item brought in to be fired after that time will be done the next business day. If the kiln is full from the day before, there may not be room for your items and they will be done in the order in which they are received.
  • We will store your piece and tools at no charge to you. If you leave a project for over 90 days we reserve the right to complete the project and then sell it for our own profit.
  • We will keep the grinders, tables, and the studio clean. We will do our best to supply you with all of your art glass needs. We will be open the hours that we have posted, and we will keep our prices as low as we possibly can.

We hope to make this a safe and enjoyable experience.
